Austech Aquaculture and Griffith University partnered together to address issues linked to growth and performance of crayfish throughout the industry. Genetic analysis techniques were used to assess the issues and included tests for:
- Population genotyping to assess the level of inbreeding in farmed populations compared with wild stocks and its potential detrimental effect on redclaw viability.
- Metagenomic analyses to investigate the microbiome associated with farmed redclaw to identify potential pathogens or beneficial organisms.
- Improved disease management by developing molecular/genomic diagnostics assays for pathogen loads in redclaw and the culture systems.
The results of this study have been compiled and is currently awaiting publication.
